Next generation model setup and benchmarking

The aim of these activities are to set-up the ecological model system for the next generation GMES marine ecological service in European Seas. Each region will have a model system comprising a core coupled hydrodynamic-plankton model, a HTL component, a representation of the carbon chemistry and a data assimilation system. These will be used to perform 20 yr hindcast of each region and to benchmark model performance.

The main objectives are:
  • To assemble the boundary conditions and forcing functions for each region.
  • To define the suite of target variables and establish the suite of metrics for benchmarking model performance.
  • To implement the coupled model system for each region.
  • To implement regional data assimilation schemes including data streams from the MyOcean TAC’s.
  • To collate validation data for each model.
  • To hindcast the ecosystem of each region and benchmark the model quality for target variables with and
    without data assimilation.
